This far north city was named after W.W. Cairns who was the then Governor of Queensland. This secluded town was built to serve miners who were travelling to the goldfield in Hodgkinson River. The population of the town declined because a simpler and easier route was discovered through Port Douglas. Cairns has a lot of exports which include sugar cane, gold and other precious metals, it is also rich in minerals and it is a also a farming region. This town is great holiday destination and tourism is one of its main revenue generators. The people of Cairns are not only friendly but they are fun loving and very easy going.
This town is blessed with a tropical climate and it has a lot of great travel destinations and sites to see. Some of the very popular sites and travel destinations include The Great Barrier Reef, Cape Tribulation, Daintree National Park and an ever expanding tropical rainforest. The city is surrounded with great scenic views and various parks. It also has an exotic swimming lagoon and topless sun bathing is allowed in this area. Even though this area just like other areas is prone to cyclones and typhoons it is still a very nice place to visit.
